Teacher No!

It’s always a shock when a trusted member of the community gets arrested on drug charges. Perhaps it’s a bit easier to take when they are prescription drugs, but not much.

Last week, second grade teacher, Lori Kirkpatrick was arrested in her vehicle along with the passenger, Tony Lisk. The pair was charged with illegal possession with intent to deliver or sell or manufacture a Schedule II narcotic. The drug in question was Dilaudid.

Dilaudid is a semi-synthetic pain medication derived from morphine. It is normally abused by grinding it up and injection. And that brings up a quirk in the law. If you possess the drug as a tablet, that’s a felony. But it’s an additional felony if you grind it up. Someone caught with the powdered form has “manufactured” a narcotic under the law, simply by changing it from a pill to a powder.

There weren’t many details released in the report. It was stated that Ms. Kirkpatrick was suspended while her school investigates the matter and that a substitute teacher was taking her classes.

It is unwise to rush to judgment here. The passenger had a criminal record, including previous charges for marijuana possession. Perhaps Ms. Kirkpatrick is the victim of an innocent mistake.

Unfortunately, in too many cases there is no mistake. The rise of prescription drug abuse reaches deep into society and no category of citizen is immune. Often, those who would avoid illegal drugs somehow think that a prescription medication is safer or not as criminal. But Dilaudid is one of the most powerful drugs around. When it is injected, it is just as bad as heroin. Users are quickly addicted and demand more. Let us hope this isn’t the case here, because the kids are likely to find out, sooner or later.
